Torsten got his big brother gift when Aven and Carrie came home. He loves the violin and spent almost four hours playing it the first day home and he continues to love it. He enjoys looking at printed music and trying to figure out the puzzle of the notes.

More Aven pictures soon, don’t worry grandparents afar! 🙂
First Aven had some jaundice, so needed some light treatment, delaying the trip home, even on Monday we were all packed up but slightly worried they might not discharge everyone until we got the results from Aven’s 4pm blood test. But by 6pm Monday, we were all home! Hoorah!
Torsten is such a loving big brother!! It is great to see. We are getting our routines (ha!) and family life figured out now.

Welcome to the world Aven Linnaea Heavner!! Everything went great for Carrie and Aven (and I didn’t faint.. 🙂 At 8:15am, Aven was born at 8 lbs and 21 inches long. Aven and Carrie are sleeping, both are eating a bit.

Between the skatepark and dinner, Matt and Torsten had about 20 minutes to kill, so we went out to Mendenhall and pulled a few iceburgs out of the lake..

We especially enjoyed this “double headed” iceburg:

and we learned about “don’t kiss the iceburg!”

NOT really!!! We were busy eating some of the ice and talking about making snow cones with it… It is wet and warm enough (Mendenhall is a temperate glacier afterall) that I don’t think you could get your tongue to stick to it. But maybe we’ll try again in January. 🙂
Back on Labor Day weekend, we went out to family camp at Echo Cove Ranch/Berner’s Bay. What great fun!

It was really fun to see friends there:

And we had a fantastic sunset and campfire with smores

We did the ~two mile hike, and going to camp was great:

And the hike back out started out well enough

but after all the fun of camp, and with a perfect mis-timing so we went out right at high tide, the hike out got a bit long..

We took a quick two hour flight up Lemon Creek Glacier (we being Mike Hekkers, Shea Mack, Dave Sauer, Nick Korzen, and Matt). We had to hustle to squeeze in GPSing all of Marijke’s velocity markers and pull out the pressure transducer. Fantastic weather for the trip!

Carrie is the featured artist of the month at the Juneau Artist Gallery, and hosted the First Friday Gallery walk for September. The crowd through the artists gallery was one of the biggest (aside from the December/holiday gallery walk)! She has a whole bunch of new tiles, and some great new prints, so go by and check them out!

It was Torsten’s first day of Kindergarten. He was happy to see a few friends in his class, and lots of friends out on the playground. He immediately took to his teacher, and it seemed to be all around positive.
